Wednesday's Words
I am a writer. Words flow through my mind and out my fingertips but with photography there is only stillness and an image. In trying to quiet the constant run of words, ideas, snippets of thought I turn to photographs, taken with the vibrant colours and diverse meaning.
A moment of pixels and light. I want to capture all of these moments in an attempt to rediscover a new way of communicating. A silent way. I cannot help but inject my own words here, in this forum of sight even though I will have every intention of doing so. For this reason I will devote my Wednesdays to the words and the rest of the week to the images.
It has been a tremendously long time since I toted a 35 mm Canon camera around with me as I traveled with my father, taking the best pictures of my entire life. The digitized age has descended, wrapping the gauntlet around such a camera, it’s location lost to a few moves within a province and across the country. The light that entered that lens was purer than a regular point and shoot, the subject hidden from my view until the magic of processing. Now it is all about the digital. The instant gratification of pressing a button and seeing your handiwork flash onto a 1.5’x1.5’ screen.
I have a new camera that molds to my hand. My daughter uses it to take pictures of her dinner or a bowl of ice cream and it has captured my son as he grew out of infancy, growing leaner and taller.
I am not a photographer. I am not paid for my images and I learn a little more with each press of the button. I won’t call myself a photographer yet, but I will soon.
I am learning. This is what I am doing.
